LOMBARDI CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

Erie 27, Woodbridge 10

ERIE PENNSYLVANIA
Divisional rivals Erie and Woodbridge met tonight in Erie with the Lombardi Conference Championship on the line. The two teams split their regular season meetings in two tightly contested affairs.
Erie won the toss and elected to kick. The Silence defense did just that on the first possession, as Rivers threw three incompletions and a punt followed. The joy inside Erie Veterans Stadium quickly subsided however, as fan (and owner) favorite Tyrod Taylor was injured early in the drive. Backup Brian Hoyer quickly put on his big boy pants and trudged through the snow towards the huddle. Hoyer and the Silence ended up with a fourteen play drive that culminated in a three yard touchdown pass to LeSean McCoy.
Woodbridge wasted no time in replying. Howard hit an end run wrong long gain, followed a couple plays later by a long pass right 7 for Rivers (long gain). Bing bang boom, tie score at 7 about ten minutes into the ballgame.
Silence's LeSean McCoy continues his comeback season with 3 TDs
Hoyer continued to be somewhat effective as Erie again marched. The drive was stopped in makeable FG range. Gould came out to try the 2-10 FG. The Erie snow proved to be too much, as Gould was not golden, and the score remained 7-7.
Rivers was pretty on point in in the Barons' drive. Twice he converted third and longs, including one with a correct free safety double team in effect. He also avoided a couple INT checks. Finally the drive was snuffed out, and Woodbridge had to punt. hoyer and Erie couldn't put much together other than a McCoy YAC for 20+ yards, and Erie returned the favor by punting.
The ensuing Woodbridge drive ran in to troubles when a solid +12 run was turned into a -10 hold. Rivers again dodged a 50/50 INT try, and the Barons punted. But, the Barons D was up to the task again as not even a luck hoyer double-teamed completion could amount to points.
After a touchback, Woodbridge drove into Erie territory. Facing a fourth and eight just outside FG range the Barons elected to roll the dice and go for it. They caught the Erie LB's double-teaming, and the vacated flat pass throw earned them a first down. A few plays later though, the nice move by Dave was taken off the table as Rivers fumbled the snap and Cameron Wake picked up the loose ball. Some Hoyer kneels and the half ended at a seven seven stalemate.
Like Willis Reed in 1970, Tyrod Taylor emerged from the locker room at halftime to rally the lads. Unlike Reed however, things got off to a lousy start, as Tyrod found the 1/1000 fumble for the second game in a row and lost the ball. Woodbridge took advantage and connected for a FG, but did lose Kearse in the process. 10-7 Woodbridge. Erie mounted a long drive, only to be stopped inside the ten and kick a short FG to tie the game.
Back to back three and outs followed. The tide then began to turn the way of the Silence. A GPI INT by Erie's 2018 defensive MVP Harrison Smith gave the ball back to Tyrod and company. There wasn't much of a drive to follow, but Gould atoned for his earlier gaffe by knocking in a 2-6, 12 FG to make the game 13-10 Erie near the end of the third quarter.
A solid SS containment enabled Erie to get a stop to start the quarter. Erie couldn't mount a big drive, as a sack on a look-in and miss on flat wrong to Stills stopped any hopes. Woodbridge was also stymied, but a +59 net punt was downed at the Erie three.
Needing to get out of the shadow of their goal posts, Erie started slowly. Another drop by Stills left Erie third and long at their five yard line. Tyrod stayed cool and hit Stills for a +11 and a first down. McCoy took an end run for 20+ yards. A couple must runs for T-Mobile netted solid yards. Erie managed to stay in third and manageable and convert. When the dust had cleared, McCoy took an end run D cards 8 with no LB backing up the play and scampered 17 yards for the touchdown.
With Woodbridge in desperation mode, the Erie secondary came up strong. A turnover on downs resulted. Going to 1930's football (3 RB, 2 TE), Erie hit some blocking ratings and cloud-of-dusted the ball into the end zone as McCoy scored his third of the game. Final score 27-10 Erie. Erie goes to their 2nd Tradition Bowl in their three years in the league...hoping to give Tyrod a chance at the prize before he unfortunately becomes a non-factor next year thanks to the Browns being jagoffs :) With no QB for next year, the Silence may be in some trouble (though it'll be nice having Erie native James Conner in the backfield!).
