GAME OF THE WEEK - WEEK 1

Staten Island 34 - Minnesota 31

Carson Palmer tosses four TD passes for the Gems in victory
Staten Island took the opening drive 12 plays for 80 yards which culminated by a Carson Palmer 11 yard TD pass to Nate Burleson. Minnesota quickly answered back with their own 60 yard drive. Staten Island's Sproles fumbled the kick-return and Minnesota punched it in on a short 2 play, 31 yard drive to go up 14-7. Staten Island fumbled again, this time Malcolm Floyd on a fumble after a catch. It felt like Minnesota was going to roll but they could not cash in with the next three drives, all stalling on Staten Island's side of the 50 with no points on the board.

An Eric Weems punt return (51.5 yard average on the day), allowed Staten Island to put 3 on the board in the last minute of the half to close the gap to 14-10 at half.

Minnesota opened the 2nd half on the ground. WIth Staten Island's safeties pulled up, Matt Ryan went over the top to Anthony Armstrong for 36 yards and the TD for a 21-10 lead. (Staten Island's GM kicked himself for not drafting Armstrong who came up big in big situations. He was going to be my next pick.)

Staten Island then went on a roll. scoring TDs on their next two long possessions (11 play drive for 80 yards, 9 play drive and 62 yards). Weems was the difference again. A 48 yard punt return gave Staten Island a short field and 4 plays and 25 yards later, Staten Island had their first lead since early in the 1st quarter at 31-24.

To answer while down for the first time since the opening drive, Minnesota went to the air but Donte Whitner came away for the pick with 7:12 left. Staten Island jigged and juked slowly down the field taking 5:20 off the clock with a 10 play, 43 yard drive which culminated in a Bironas 27 yard field goal and a 34-24 lead with only 1:52 left in regulation. The key play was a 4th and 1 yard conversion from the Minnesota 44 yard line with 5:24 left. With Minnesota in goal line defense, Carson Palmer found Jabar Gaffney for 14 yards to keep the chains moving. Ryan Torain had another key 1st down with a 13 yard run when guessed right.

1:52 is an eternity in Strat. Minnesota had the ball and was moving but Staten Island prevented the long ball. While Minnesota moved down the field and scored on a 77 yard TD drive, they did so as time expired. Final Staten Island 34- Minnesota 31.
