Game Story
Ben Roethlisberger was the star of the game as the visitors from Sin City beat Flagstaff by the score of 33 to 24. Roethlisberger burned the Flagstaff defense for 327 yards and 2 touchdowns. Flagstaff took the early lead outscoring Sin City 10 to 3 in the first quarter. Sin City was on top at the half 12 to 10. A bright spot for Flagstaff was a pass to Keenan Allen that went for 54 yards with 0:18 left in the 1st quarter. But in the end that fine effort was wasted..
  • In a game that was entirely too close for comfort, the Godfathers out lasted a Savage onslaught in Flagstaff. Chris won the opening toss and elected to defer. Sin City’s opening drive stalled just across mid-field and they were forced to punt. Flagstaff methodically drove the field on a 14-play drive, frustrating the Godfather D, and opened the scoring with a field goal (FLG 3 – SIN 0). The Godfathers took the ensuing kickoff and would string together a 9-play drive to tie the game up with a FG of their own (FLG 3 – SIN 3). And so, like a couple of heavy weight fighters exchanging blows the crowd waited to see who would throw the knockout punch!

Flagstaff tired of settling for field goals would score the first touchdown of the game on their next drive. A 54-yard strike to Keenan Allen and then a 21-yard TD pass to Evan Engram landed the first punch on the chin (FLG 10 – SIN 3). A 2-play combo crumpled the defending champs to the mat and had them questioning their defense and whether they could go the distance. The Godfathers responded with another 9-play drive, but again would be forced to settle for 3 (FLG 10 – SIN 6). Chris found his team stuck in no man’s land late in the second quarter. 4th and 3 at Sin City’s 35. Coach Voncub deemed it too close to punt and too far to attempt a field goal. The Godfather defense got a much-needed confidence booster stuffing the 4th down attempt for a 1-yard loss. Again, Big Ben would drive his team deep into Flagstaff territory and again Sin City settled for 3 (FLG 10 – SIN 9). The half would end with Randy Bullock kicking his 4th field goal for Sin City and giving the team their first lead (SIN 12 – FLG 10). The half ended and the Godfathers would enter the locker clinging to the ropes a bit but happy to survive the opening rounds without getting knocked out.

The second half opened with three interceptions. The first was a huge momentum changer. Chris had drove to the Godfather 10-yard line with the opening 2nd half drive. A short pass call had fooled Coach Wroblewski looking for the run but fortunately had left 4 in the short zone. All Pro Kyle Fuller’s great impact triggered and robbed the Savages of 7 points. Big Ben would return the favor 5 plays later throwing a long bomb pick of his own. Then just 2 short plays later, Glover Quinn successfully double-teamed Flagstaff’s Evan Engram, leading to a Trubisky interception. Sin City would capitalize on the turnover and Alshon Jeffery scored the team’s first touchdown (SIN 19 – FLG 10). Flagstaff would land the next punch, early in the 4th quarter, with an 8-play drive capped by a Trey Burton TD (SIN 19 – FLG 17). Still the heavy weights kept exchanging blows and it was the Godfather’s turn! Starting at their own 28, Big Ben hit Alvin Kamara on a wheel route for 42 yards. Then a 12-yard strike to Alshon followed by a 9-yard TD pass to Kamara and the Godfathers had landed an upper cut of their own (SIN 26 – FLG 17) with 9:18 left in the fourth. The Savages were seeing stars from the punch and on the ensuing drive would throw an interception on the third play! The Godfathers would stall at Flagstaff’s 30. Godfather kicker Bullock was sent in for his fifth FG attempt and he’d push the ball wide left, MISS! The crowd roared back to life and so did the Savages, scoring 4 plays later; capped by a 51-yard strike to Keenan Allen (SIN 26 – FLG 24). A failed onside attempt left the Godfathers with great field position and 3:36 left in the game. Coach Wroblewski decided not to run the clock out. Flagstaff’s quick strike ability and a meager 2-point lead was too close for comfort. The Godfathers would drive 31 yards in 6 plays and finally land the KO punch on a Mariota 1-yard TD run (SIN 33 – FLG 24).

Congratulations to Chris and the Flagstaff Savages on an amazing season!!! It’s not easy making the playoffs in this league and he called an amazing game. He frequently had me chasing my tail and had some great double team calls on D. This game was a 2-point differential right up to the last minute and the outcome could easily have gone the other way.

The Godfathers now wait and see if they will travel to face the Airzona Air Raid next week or will they host St. Louis in the Sin Bin.
