Sin City outlasted Oakville 32-25 to win the Landry Conference Championship and advances to the TFL Bowl. The first and third quarters belonged to Sin City, while the 2nd and 4th favored Oakville, but Sin City was the better club this day.
Congrats to Mark on a great win – he coached an outstanding game, mixing it up on offense and sniffing out plays on defense. Right from the start, he made a big call by switching Jalen Ramsey over to RCB to negate Adam Thielen’s presence at split end and had numerous correct double-team calls throughout the game. Likewise, he hit some big plays on offense when I was cheating up for the run, and pounded the ball on the ground when I was protecting against the big play. He earned the win and will represent the Landry Conference well in the TFL Bowl.
The first half was fairly low-scoring, although both teams had their opportunities. Oakville was fortunate to be close, as their first three drives went punt, punt, interception, while Sin City scored on their first three drives. However two of the three Sin City drives stalled and they had to settle for field goals, and after scoring a TD, Cody Parkey missed the PAT, so the Sin City lead was 12-0 early in the second quarter. Oakville finally put together a scoring drive, capped off when Albert Wilson scored from 14 yards out on a dumpoff pass to cut the lead to 12-7 with 11:24 remaining in the half.
The teams quickly traded possessions back and forth seven times with only one possession lasting longer than 1:48. Oakville got the ball back with 1:37 left, and it briefly looked like they took the lead when Russell Wilson connected with Tyreek Hill for a 29 yard TD pass. However, there was a flag on the play to erase the TD. Oakville ended up kicking a FG to make the score 12-10 at the half.
It looked like Sin City was going to put the game away in the second half however, as they took the kickoff and marched 75 yards for a TD to stretch their lead to 19-10. Bilal Powell punched it in on a 4th and 1 that Oakville had guessed right, but couldn’t stop Powell from scoring. After stopping Oakville on the Hoosiers first drive, Sin City returned the punt 60 yards to start their drive from the Oakville 27. On the first play of the drive, they covered the remaining 27 yards for another TD. Parkey again missed the PAT, but the score was now 25-10 Sin City.
On the 3rd play of their next drive, Russell Wilson was again intercepted and Sin City marched down the field. Oakville was desperate to stay alive, but Alex Smith snuck in from the 1 yard line and extended the lead to 32-10 with 5:24 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
At this point Oakville was just hoping to avoid getting embarrassed, and they drove 70 yards on 12 plays, but turned the ball over on downs at the Sin City 10 yard line. Oakville picked off a pass on Sin City’s next drive and then went 66 yards on their drive with Javorious Allen scoring on a 2-yard run, and then Russell Wilson scoring the 2-point conversion on a “must run” after the short pass attempt went awry, cutting the lead to 32-18 with 10:12 remaining
Sin City took over with great field position after Oakville’s onside kick attempt failed, but didn’t take advantage and punted back to Oakville. It looked like Oakville was finished as they faced a 4th and 27 from their own 19 yard line, but somehow managed to connect on a 29 yard pass to keep the drive alive. The Hoosiers ended up continuing the drive and Delanie Walker caught an 11 yard TD pass to cut the lead to 32-25. Oakville kicked away and managed to get a 3-and-out, taking over at their own 17 with 2:06 remaining. One problem Oakville faced was that both Paul Richardson and Albert Wilson had reached their quota of catches for the day, taking away a couple of their additional deep threats. Oakville put together a respectable drive and got within striking distance, to the Sin City 28 yard line, but time was not on their side and a desperation pass fell incomplete with 1 second left on the clock, giving Sin City the exciting 32-25 win.
Robert Woods was the offensive hero for Sin City with 7 catches for 169 yards and a TD, while Russell Wilson had a nice 69 attempt day for 388 yards, but had two costly interceptions. Sin City’s defense came up big when they needed to, with four sacks to go along with the two picks.
