Game Story
| |||||
With a solid effort the visiting team from Delco defeated Utica by the score of 23 to 14. Tom Brady threw 38 times for 189 yards. Delco won the air battle out-passing Utica 189 to 107 yards. They controlled the ball for 35:17. Delco took the lead into the locker room at the half 9 to 7. Devonta Freeman ran the ball 21 times gaining 166 yards and scoring 2 times for Utica , in a losing effort. |
DELCO PENNSYLVANIA
The Delco Destroyers defeated Utica, putting a sudden end to what had been the TFL's top performing team. Utica's amazing 14-2 record was a tribute to their coaching skill and quality playmakers, but they were unable to move the ball against the Delco defense. It shaped up as a battle between football's two premier quarterbacks, but Aaron Rogers was snake-bitten in the first half when he threw 3 interceptions.
Unfortunately, for Delco, they couldn't fully capitalize, turning the three gifts into field goals. In fact, Tom Brady didn't exactly shine bright, as after the first Rodgers INT, Brady worked the ball to first and goal at the 3, but then missed wide open receivers on back to back plays. Delco had to settle for a field goal. On another occasion, after a Rogers pick, Brady threw one right back to the Spartans. And the Destroyers fumbled a punt, which Utica recovered, as both teams seemed to be jittery under the pressure of win or go home. There was even one series where Utica drove the ball into field goal range but fumbled it away; then Delco drove the other way, getting all the way to the Spartan's 8, before fumbling it back.
Utica did manage the only TD of the first half. Similar to Delco earlier, the Spartans got the ball first and goal from the 3, but instead of throwing the ball unsuccessfully, they stuck to the ground and Devonte Freeman ran it in. That gave Utica the lead--their only one of the game.
Two subsequent field goals put Delco back up, 9-7 at the half, but they were moral victories for Utica. To have three interceptions in the half and only be trailing by 2 points surely seemed like cause for Spartan optimism heading into the second half.
However, in that half, the Delco defense was superb, holding Utica to just one touchdown, as they found ways to keep Rodgers and company in check without the help of any INTs. Rogers finished the game having completed fewer than half his passes, and the ones he did complete were of the dink and dunk variety. Star WR Stefon Diggs and Sam Watkins were both held without a catch. Only one ball was caught by a WR, and that was a 6 yarder to Dontrelle Inman.
Late in the third quarter, Delco finally finished off a drive with a TD. On a 3rd down right at the Utica 20, the Delco braintrust, knowing coach Fullem's love of doubling three receivers on 3rd downs, dialed up a long pass to David Johnson, one of the few RB's in the league with the ability to get deep. Brady was unable to hit him, but a pass interference penalty was called. (The league's most outspoken voice against penalties was, admittedly, the beneficiary of a critical yellow flag.) The ball was spotted at the one, where Kenneth Dixon ran it in to give the Destroyers a 16-7 lead late in the 3rd.
It was amazing how quickly Utica struck back. A 19 yard run by Freeman (hit the 9{} on the defensive LB card against a 3-3-5), followed by a 21 yard scramble by Rogers when the defense had the pass all bottled up, (Must run, roll of 3) and then on the next play, a Freeman 32 yard run for the TD (roll of 2), and just like that, the Spartans made it a single possession game again, at 16-14.
But now these teams were showing their true colors, playing with great resilience under pressure, Delco responding with a nice drive that brought the ball to the Utica 6. A pitchout to David Johnson, but the Spartans were ready, not only calling run, but also pulling their linebackers from the inside of the line and sending them crashing toward the corners to presciently clog up the zone read. But then, TE Logan Paulsen, Delco's unheralded 15th round pick, threw an impactful block that sprung Johnson for the TD.
Delco was back up by 9 with 7 to play.
Again, their defense put the clamps on Rogers and Company to make the 23-14 lead hold up until the final gun.
Utica and Delco had split their regular season meetings and it's always a great chess match when we play, as Brian is a superb coach, and we've gotten to know each other's moves and counter moves.
Johnson, who finished with 107 yards on the ground and also hauled in 6 catches, was the Offensive MVP.
The Defensive MVP was backup strong safety Eric Reid. When starter Clayton Geathers got hurt early in the game, it meant an end to the automatic containment assured by the run-stuffing Geathers. But Reid ended up looking like a carbon copy, making two big third down stops on throws underneath. He also batted away a pass on 3rd down, and there were also those 2 interceptions he snared. Talk about "next man up."
Next man up for Delco will be the winner of the Erie-Woodbridge battle.
