Game Story
| |||||
Martellus Bennett had a strong game as the visitors from Erie bested Woodbridge by the score of 38 to 31. Bennett received 6 passes for 129 receiving yards. The biggest play of the game was a pass to Kenny Britt that covered 62 yards with 5:24 left in the 1st quarter. Erie had a good start outscoring Woodbridge 14 to 10 in the first quarter. They led at halftime 21 to 17. Erie led after three quarters 28 to 23. Philip Rivers threw 37 times for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns for Woodbridge. |
Erie traveled to Woodbridge today for the second consecutive week, this time with more than the division title on the line. The Barons have owned the Silence since their entry into the league, knocking them out in the Lombardi Conference championship game last year and beating them twice this year.
Erie started quickly, taking the opening kickoff and, thanks to a Bennett Long Gain YAC, driving for an eventual McCoy one yard TD on 4th and goal. Woodbridge answered with a short field goal. Erie again struck quickly, this time a long gain from Taylor to Britt for 60+ yards that set up another McCoy (correctly keyed) TD. As per normal, David answered back, this time Rivers sneaking in from one yard out to make the game 14-10 at the end of one.
The second period was a bevy of missed opportunities followed by unlikely scores. After a Taylor INT in the end zone, Rivers returned the favor shortly thereafter...and Harrison Smith returned it back by fumbling the return. Rivers the giver, apparently a friend of Smith, threw another INT. This time, with 22 seconds left, Erie played it safe, calling a run to McCoy and planning on settling for the FG. McCoy found the box symbol with no linebacker containment, and took it in for a 21-10 lead.
In what felt like a gigantic turning point, Woodbridge followed with a 2 play, 75 yard TD drive. A long pass guessed right out of the full house netted 25 on receiver roll, then a 50 yarder guessed right for the TD to make it 21-17 at half...and the momentum strongly in the favor of the Barons.
McCoy again gave the Silence an 11 point lead, this time taking it in from 24 yards out. In what was a common theme, Woodbridge answered right back, as I doubled the wrong WR and Meredith hauled in the 27 yarder. A penalty on the XP let Woodbridge try again from the 1, so they went for two. Howard was stopped, and the score was 28-23 after three quarters.
A couple INT were followed by Erie punts. Midway through the quarter the Silence played it conservatively deep in Baron territory, and wound up with a short FG and 8 point lead. The Silence D was not up to the moment, and Rivers led the Barons down the field, with the key play a double teamed long gain as McDonald found the 9 on Rivers card for 30 yards. Howard blasted through two men in linebuck zone, and skirted around the end on the deuce, Dave correctly picking the one spot to avoid the key with another good call. Tie game, about 4 minutes to go.
With McCoy struggling to get consistent yardage and almost out of carries, the Silence appeared in trouble. Two look-ins to McCoy led to a 3rd and 4. In one of the key plays of the game, backup Dwayne Washington took the 3rd down carry for 5 yards off-tackle and a first down. McCoy then came back in and found a short gain to take the ball into Baron territory. Some small consistent gains and a penalty set up the Silence dpp in Baron territory. Erie planned on kneeling the clock down and kicking a FG. With the ball on the 9, fearing a backwards play and variable FG rule moving me back, Taylor handed the ball to Riddick. An incorrect key got Riddick in the wrong column, and a short gain roll put the Silence up 38-31, but forced the Silence to kick off.
Barner ran the kickoff from 9 yards deep, but rolled my card for a 14 yard gain. A flat pass netted a big gain, but there were still I believe 65 yards for Woodbridge to go with 1 play. On the final play, Wake came up on the D, and got the game ending sack.
Rivers had a pretty strange day. A whopping 5 INT, and a lot of long gains guessed right. He probably did better on his own card in long gain than flat pass percentage-wise. McCoy finished with a nice average thanks to his decent gains, most of the day he was bottled up pretty well.
