On the opening drive of the second half, the Godfathers would stall at Dunedin’s 32-yard line. Randy Bullock has been snake bit this season with attempts from this range due to the variable FG adjustment. True to form the wind picked up right as the ball was placed and changed what was a slam dunk FG into the third miss of the season from that range. Coach Mark was seen slamming his Microsoft Surface on the turf and if you read his lips it looked like he was saying, “This is some Chicago kicker #$#%@% #$%$%#$ #$$%%!” Brian showed no mercy towards the Godfather’s misfortune and would capitalize on the failed attempt and convert it into 3 points of his own, retaking the lead 17-14. The Godfathers would tie up the game at 17 after failing to convert inside Dunedin’s 10-yard line. In response to the FG the Spartans drove 9 plays, 75 yards and assumed a commanding 7-point lead with 9:18 left in the game, Dunedin 24-17. Former Dunedin Spartan, Ben Roethlisberger’s determination could be seen on his face. The revenge narrative had been written by all the talking heads of the sports world. He calmly drove 72 yards over 8 plays to tie the game at 24 on the ensuing possession. Both teams would end up with another attempt to break the deadlock before the fourth quarter closed, but neither could produce points to prevent overtime.
The Sin Bin was deafening after the Godfather’s won the coin toss and received the ball to start overtime. Unfortunately, two offside penalties would stall the Godfather drive before it began, and they were forced to punt. It was Aaron Rogers turn to stroll on the field, starting at the Spartan 26 he only needed 52 yards to put J.K Scott in a position to win the game. Aaron took deep shots early in the drive with the Godfather’s focused on the run but twice Rodgers missed his mark. A great endrun call by Coach Fullem kept the drive alive on a 3rd and 10. Then the Godfather’s front line broke through on the ensuing 3rd and 9. The pass rush lead to a rare errant throw by the Spartan quarterback and Jalen Ramsey picked it off and returned it to Dunedin’s 45 yard line. A key fourth down conversion by the Godfathers at the Spartans 37-yard line would lead to a Randy Bullock 40 yard field goal. The fans rushed the field, Big Ben went over and shook Coach Brian’s hand feeling vindicated for being passed up for Aaron Rodgers in the trade that shipped him to Sin City.
This was another great match-up, I’ve had some competitive games this year and this ranks up there with the best of them. Brian called an amazing game. I’m sure he would have like the outcome to go the other way and was really one die roll away from changing the outcome. The biggest downer of the night was Strat was buggy all night and had frequent crashes. It didn’t matter who hosted, whether we rebooted or not, despite that we both had fun playing the game. Just wish Strat could dial in their code.
